Whiteout in Wyoming :: Rhetorical Analysis Kevin Deenihan Essays

Whiteout in Wyoming This article is a diverting memory of a youthful school student’s outing to Jackson Hole, Wyoming entitled â€Å"Whiteout in Wyoming†. He utilizes a diary section structure and explanatory interests to empower his crowd to unmistakably see his discernment that Wyoming is white. Through his entire get-away there is snow all over the place, and he just experiences one minority, who I sort of got the inclination that the creator didn’t think of him as a â€Å"real† minority, or a minor enough minority. It is composed by an understudy from the University of California at Berkeley named Kevin Deenihan, who as of late got away to his home in Jackson Hole with his family. The article was distributed in the main deliberately amusing diary from UC Berkeley called, â€Å"The Heuristic Squelch†. Most understudies from UC Berkeley read the diary, yet anybody can buy in. It is likewise distributed on the web for the individuals who don’t feel they need six issues each year. The motivation behind the article is to educate individuals who have never been to Wyoming how it is, however it’s for the most part to engage. There are three structures in this contention: sequential, topical, and circumstances and logical results. It is in diary passage style starting February 21st and traversing for the following five days of his excursion talking about the nearness of day off the absence of minorities in Jackson Hole. It is circumstances and logical results since he spends such a large number of seeing one minority individual that when he comes back to Los Angeles he is increasingly energetic about them and tips his taxi driver, named Ahmed, extra. He doesn't utilize any rationale to persuade the crowd that that Wyoming is white, yet utilizes a deductive contention by for the most part taking note of that â€Å"for the previous four years we’ve had a snowstorm any place we go skiing†. (Deenihan 2003) Then moving to a progressively explicit Rhetorical Analysis of model, for instance, â€Å"It is, actually, snowing, and we locate that a mammoth cloud has settled over the mountain†. (Deenihan 2003) Then He develops himself, however not in a way that would make him increasingly sound an incredible opposite truth be told. He tells the peruser that he is a climate god since mists tail him any place he goes. At the point when somebody says something to that effect, it removes a ton of their validity. He offers to the reader’s comical inclination and symbolism. He very quickly pulls in the crowd by a dark record of his scene in the subsequent sentence.

Sleep, Social Media, and Routines Challenges of Time Management

One of the greatest challenges of our generation is the nearly constant distraction and temptation that technology affords us, from opening a new tab on our web browser to surfing apps on our phone. How do we harness all of the positive connectivity that these tools offer us, without feeling that our lives are dominated by them? Technology Sleep Research has shown that our circadian, or sleep-wake rhythms, are particularly sensitive to wavelengths of light at the blue end of the spectrum, which are emitted by the screens of our electronic devices. This light exposure has been shown to have alerting effects on us and suppress melatonin, a chemical in our brain that helps signal drowsiness.[1] Avoiding screens an hour before bedtime is one option for improving sleep hygiene, but this is tough given the demands of homework, more and more e-textbooks, and virtual socializing. Another option, then, is an app called Flux which will gradually block blue light emission from your screen, turning everything a rosy, yellow hue as you get closer to bedtime. Other key tips for sleep hygiene include separating your work space from sleep space and getting into the habit of a regular sleep and wake time, although adolescents tend naturally towards a later bedtime and wake-up, and unfortunately, this tendency is not always supported by school start times. Dealing with Distractions The Internet is both a source of infinite knowledge and productivity as well as infinite procrastination and rabbit holes of BuzzFeed articles. What are some ways to manage this?Courtesy of BuzzFeed of course. Just kidding! Set aside deliberate times when you want to accomplish work, and experiment with turning off e-mail and text to sharpen your focus. You’ll be surprised by how inefficient we are with multi-tasking! A single text popping into the corner of your computer screen can distract you for minutes even after you have replied. You may even want to dedicate 20 or 30 minutes in the morning or evening to answering e-mail to feel that this chore does not take over the day and prevent you from accomplishing other work on the computer. Tech to fight tech: When you need the Internet for homework, it can be hard to resist the temptation to browse. Programs such as SelfControl or Cold Turkey can allow you to block a website such as Facebook or Netflix for a pre-set amount of time while you work. â€Å"Tech shabbat†: Filmmaker Tiffany Shlain has popularized the concept of a â€Å"tech shabbat† in which she un-plugs completely from her devices for 24 hours a week. She’s amazed by how long the hours feel during that day because of how present she is able to be with her surroundings and the people around her. Give it a try and see how it feels! You may even want to start small with just a shabbat from Instagram or your laptop. Lastly, I think it bears noting that receiving e-mail and text notifications, likes on our posts, or the buzz of an incoming message activates the reward pathway of our brain. This reinforces the behavior of checking for e-mails and likes, making these habits difficult to resist, especially when our willpower is running low (i.e., at the end of a long day at school). That’s why taking away the option to even look, such as by turning your phone on airplane mode while you study, can be a powerful way to reign in the habit. Routines Finally, routines are crucial tools for time management. These routines may include activities that you want to be better at regularly accomplishing (such as flossing) as well as activities that you look forward to (such as watching a movie with your family on weekends). Both kinds of routines are important to cultivating your sense of well-being. Study routines, such as a quiet place in your home or library where you enjoy working and a group of friends who come together to review for exams, are also helpful. Meditation, which we mentioned at the beginning of this series, is particularly vulnerable to getting excised out of the schedule since it may not feel â€Å"necessary† in the moment, so building it into part of a regular routine will make it eventually become as automatic as brushing your teeth. Former CC staff member Kening Zhu has a fantastic blog post on how to develop a consistent Morning Routine that will enable you to accomplish things before the day has officiall y begun and set yourself up for a smooth, productive day. Good luck, and would love to hear thoughts on your own struggles and triumphs navigating our hyper-stimulating world! [1] UpToDate Database: Sleep Hygiene. Last updated August 26, 2016. Raising Minimum Wage - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1643 Downloads: 7 Date added: 2019/05/15 Category Law Essay Level High school Tags: Minimum Wage Essay Did you like this example? The minimum wage is currently $7.25 that had started in the year of 2009. Yet, some people still do not think it is enough. The minimum wage had started off as 25 cents per hour in the year of 1938. Many would say that is crazy, because how did they survive with only being paid a quarter hourly. Many things was much cheaper back in the them times (not all things), although people fail to realize that raising the minimum will end up hurting Americans more than helping them. Minimum wage is the minimum amount anybody can get paid at a job. There is still jobs that will pay less than $7.25; like being a waitress or a hostess. It is not impossible to make more than the minimum either. Most jobs pay based off experience or skills even knowledge of what you are doing. Minimum wage rising would cause other things to rise up also in prices, maybe not all things but majority of the cost of living will be raised. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Raising Minimum Wage" essay for you Create order Why do people think raising the minimum wage would be better for the society? Some will argue that it is not enough to keep up with bills even if you work part time. A lot of people do not see the importance of raising minimum wage and why it should not be raised, they only look at it at as making more money. There is still people out here that do not even know what can happen if the minimum wage is raised and why it is the way it is even how it became to be the way that it currently is. There is more to minimum wage than just raising it. How would raising the minimum wage affect our economy? In what ways? (Wolfram, Stoll 2018) As mentioned before, it is not impossible to make more even less than what the minimum wage is. It can be a little difficult to get paid more but that is where somebody used their skills to show the job that they are worthy for getting a raise unskilled workers get paid less than skilled workers, and that is because the skilled worker knows more and is more experienced with what their job is. People do not find it fair that a grown woman or man is getting paid the same amount as a high school teen. It is at their own fault that they are making the same amount as a teen, they had the same chance the teen had. Not knowing everybody situation but within time you can find a job that pays you over $10 an hour. It might be challenging thing to do, for a felon to get a good paying job, but nothing is impossible in the generation we live in today. There is many opportunities especially in the generation today, to make lots of money in various ways. (The Balance Careers, 2018) So what is really bad about raising minimum wage?Look at what is happening in massachusetts, Before other states jump on the $15 minimum-wage bandwagon. One of two states with a $10-an-hour minimum wage. Massachusetts increased the minimum wage from $8 to $9 at the start of 2015 and to $10 on the first day of 2016. Now the state is said to have huge amount of employment losses. People who are for raising minimum wage are the ones who feel as unskilled workers deserve it, so they would not be living in poverty. The result of raising minimum wage will cause so many problems that americans are not fully aware of, or correctly informed about, it will cause many people to have to be let go because the people who are paying the minimum can not afford the higher wages so in that case, the employers have no choice but to let the people go. Business will go out of business. Our unemployment rate will increase rather than increasing. Many more will be living in poverty than they already are now. Americans who are for it also feel as that the reason for poverty is because the minimum wage is not high enough, but that is not what seems to be the case. The first standard minimum wage is formed under the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, the nationwide minimum wage was designed to lift millions of American workers out of poverty and to stimulate the economy(Wittner). The past year, many angry protesters that were working fast food were suggesting that the minimum wage goes up to $15 rather tha $7.25. Others feel that fast food employees should not have that option, knowing there is plenty more jobs that pay more than $7.25. Not knowing every persons situation, most people working fast food have the ability to find a higher paying job. There is people who actually get paid for their work and their effort unlike somebody just flipping burgers and taking orders to be paid $15 an hour. If any wage was to go up, it should be to factory jobs or construction workers, they do more for the community than anybody else in my opinion. It would take a significant rise in productivity by fast food workers to where they could honestly earn fifteen dollars an hour. To put it in other words, the typical fast food restaurant works its employees for 40 hours or less a week, for the fact that after a certain amount of time the individual is considered a full-time employee and as such is awarded full-time benefits. Whether or not they spend said amount of time actually working is up to the level of business at any given time and their level of motivation on any particular day. The amount of work does not directly correlate to the time spent at work and to insinuate that it does implies willful ignorance. Factors like willingness to work, the coming and going of people from the restaurant, and the presence of a supervisor all affect work done in a day. The first of the aforementioned factors is possibly the most important because if someone is not willing to do work, then the other two will not matter to them. Bernies message resonated throughout the disgruntled working class the group was seeing stagnating wages and little job opportunities, while the majority of new GDP was going straight to the top one percent of earners. This resulted in a lot of anger towards the greedy upper class who can afford personal yachts and private jets but cannot afford to raise their employees wages to a livable wage. If we follow Sanders lead and lift the federal minimum wage to $15, anyone working a full-time, 40-hour per week job would have an annual salary of $31,285. While these demands to raise the federal minimum wage may make a lot of sense to the average citizen, those who study economics see that increasing the minimum wage will lead to unemployment and inefficiency. Because the resources of a firm are scarce, so is the amount of money that a firm can pay out for unskilled labor. When presented with an increase in the minimum wage, the firm must lay people off and stop hiring new people. This can result in massive unemployment in the short-term, the movement of jobs overseas and increased long term automation. To elaborate on this concept, lets consider a hypothetical market between unskilled laborers and a firm that produces rainbow sprinkles: Let the people say that Rainbow Sprinkle Co. makes $10,000 per hour for producing rainbow sprinkles. After the costs of the ingredients, factory maintenance and other fixed costs of production are controlled, the money that the company has to hire unskilled labor is $5,000 per hour. The company yields $5 an hour in sprinkles from each unskilled laborer, so Rainbow Sprinkle Co. is willing and able to pay 1,000 employees up to $5 an hour to do the work. Each year, Rainbow Sprinkle Co. pays out $10,400,000 to its employees. Each of those 1,000 full-time employees will earn $10,400 annually, which is not enough to live on. After a while, the sprinkle workers demand a higher minimum wage of $15 an hour, so that their job pay is enough to support a family. Faced with this new minimum wage, the Rainbow Sprinkle Co. must pay each employee three times as much as before. It seems like an easy solution, but Rainbow Sprinkle Co. still only has $5,000 per hour to pay for unskilled work. For every employee the Rainbow Sprinkle Co. keeps, it must fire two in order to pay the hourly wage of one. The firm also must pay $15 per hour to people who yield only $5 an hour in profit, making the Rainbow Sprinkle Co. take a $10 per hour loss per employee. This new minimum wage has many unintended consequences. First, it reduces the overall number of people employed by two-thirds, and also reduces the firms efficiency due to that $10 loss per hour per employee. To compensate for this loss, the company will have to drive up the prices of sprinkles. Rainbow Sprinkle Co. will eventually move their factories overseas to a place where there is a lower minimum wage in order to stay competitive. With the new increased cost of human labor, they will spend more money on producing sprinkle-bots to take the place of workers. This new incentive to automate and leave the country will further increase the level of unemployment in the sprinkle sector and displace people from their jobs. So to summarize why minimum wage should not be raised; it is not good for the economy. Think about all the small businesses even the big ones at that. Many jobs will be lost, unemployment rate will double up, poverty will rise. It is just not the best bet at this point. Citizens got to stop being lazy and go to school to get an education or just have to hustle, because there is many ways to making money and this is not false news.

Key Components Of Effective Communication - 873 Words

Communication is the process in which we transmit our thoughts and ideas to another person. Knowledge of the basic communication process is essential for communication more effectively. Having effective communication skills are essential in today s network. How someone perceives your message will prompt how you are heard. There are two key components of effective communication. First, senders need to accurately communicate their intended message. Understanding is unlikely, otherwise. Second, receivers need to correspondingly perceive and interpret the message accurately. Anything that gets in the way of the accurate transmission and reception of a message is a barrier to effective communication. It is important to be aware of and avoid these barriers when communicating (Kreitner Kinicki, 2009, p. 404). The four barriers to effective communication are process barriers, personal barriers, physical barriers, and semantic barriers. To be a successful manager, these barriers will need to be conquered. In the process of communication you have the sender, the message, and the receiver. The sender will encode the message and determine which medium of communicating that message he will use. Noise can affect the process of communication. Noise can come when the sender forgets to send the message, or there are mixed signals in the message, or a poor telephone connection, or background noise, or even distance between the sender and receiver. Parenting Styles

Parenting Styles- An Asian Insight Essay In 1978, Dr. Diana Baumrind was the first to define the four parenting styles. Since then, there have been more styles that utilize different category designs. For Baumrind, her categories were responsiveness and demandingness. Responsiveness is defined as warmth: a parents response to the needs of a child in an accepting and supporting way. Responsiveness can also be used interchangeable with love. Parents use love as a tool to teach right from wrong, increase a childs self-esteem, and encourage individualism. In order to portray love, these parents use a combination of communication, negotiation, and reason. Demandingness, or limits, refers to a parents expectation of mature, responsible behavior. Parents use limits and expectations to teach respect and provide a sound structure for their child. Consequently, the use of control and harsh discipline is used. The differences between the four styles is easily seen and defined in the following chart: Baumrinds Four Parenting Styles Demandingness ResponsivenessLowHigh LowUninvolvedAuthoritarian HighPermissiveAuthoritative Authoritative or democratic parents are considered flexible, using negotiation and communication with control and discipline to allow for give-and-take situations. They are less likely to use physical punishment. These parents encourage a childs uniqueness and gives love and respect. They offer their support in everything the child does, even when the result is failure. Rather they encourage a healthy rebound. Authoritarian parents are seen as highly directive individuals who value obedience to maintain order. They tend to monopolize a child and hold them to, sometimes, unreasonable goals. These parents constantly supervise, give reminders, and instruct their child in every aspect of everyday life. In some extremes and due to external sources, authoritarian parents give excessive amounts of duties and chores upon a child, which would cause a child to miss out on the ;carefree; aspect of childhood. These parents also discourage discussion between them and their children Permissive or indulgent parents would rather avoid problematic behavior and allow a child a great deal of freedom. They will prefer to submit to a child who throws a temper tantrum and demands to avoid a big confrontation and become unable to say no. Uninvolved parents show no interest in the life of the child and may actively reject or neglect the child. This may be due to a preoccupation with work, poverty, wealth, alcoholism, divorce, or illness. Children can be influenced by different parenting styles. The following chart summaries the effects that coincide with the different parenting styles.
